Our History
Celebrating Over 50 Years of Choral Excellence1971
The Beginning of a Legacy
The North Carolina Boys Choir was founded in 1971 by Mr. William J. Graham as the Durham Boychoir. For over 40 years, Mr. Graham’s vision brought together young boys from diverse backgrounds to experience the power of choral music.
In 1983, Governor James B. Hunt designated the group as the official North Carolina Boys Choir after a series of historic performances alongside the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra.
Expanding Horizons
In 1992, the Choir expanded its offerings by creating a chamber ensemble, composed of tenors and basses, including graduates, community members, and even fathers of boys in the choir. In 2011, the institution embraced another significant transformation with the formation of the Prima Girls Choir, enriching our choral repertoire and widening the scope of our mission to include talented young women.
Historic Partnerships and Performances
Over the decades, the North Carolina Boys Choir and Girls Choir have collaborated with renowned institutions like the North Carolina Symphony, Duke Chapel Choir, Choral Society of Durham, and more. Notable performances include Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, a 2014 appearance at Carnegie Hall, and a featured performance at the Spoleto Festival in 2017.
A Global Presence
Our choirs have traveled the world, performing nationally and internationally, bringing the beauty of choral music to new audiences. From regional tours to performances abroad, the Choir has consistently represented North Carolina with pride.
